Sir,

I have received your despatch number 190 of November

14th, transmitting a translation of a letter from the

Commissioner for Foreign Affairs at Canton claiming £572,452.

in respect of damage alleged to have been done to the villages

of Taipinghu and Fulai as a result of the naval punitive

expedition undertaken after the piracy of the .S."Kochow".

2. I approve your proposal to return no reply to this

claim.
